How to Inspect a Second-Hand Carbon Mast Before You Buy
The mast is the single most loaded structural part of a hydrofoil — it takes your full body weight, transmitted through a lever arm up to a metre long, every time you’re up and riding. Carbon masts are built to handle that, but they’re not indestructible, and a mast that’s been through a bad impact can look completely fine while hiding real damage. If you’re buying used, the mast deserves the most careful look of any component.
Visual inspection
- Run your eyes and fingers down both faces of the mast in good light, looking for spider-web cracking, raised or bubbled patches, or any area where the surface texture changes — these are signs of delamination between the carbon layers.
- Check the leading and trailing edges specifically — impacts (dropping the mast, hitting the bottom on a rock or reef) tend to show up here first.
- Look at the base and tip fittings where the mast bolts to the fuselage and to the board’s mast track or tuttle box — hairline cracks often start right at the edge of a fitting, where stress concentrates.
The tap test
Gently tap along the mast with a coin or your knuckle, listening for the sound to change. A solid, consistent “tap” tone throughout means the layup is intact; a dull or “dead” thud in one specific spot — different from the surrounding area — can indicate a delaminated void underneath the surface, even if it looks fine visually. This isn’t foolproof, but combined with a visual check it catches most problem masts.
Flex it, don’t just look at it
With the mast off the board, hold the base and gently flex the tip side-to-side and fore-aft. It should flex smoothly and return cleanly — any point where it feels like it “hinges” or flexes unevenly compared to the rest of the length is worth asking the seller about directly.
Fittings and hardware
Check that the mast’s mounting holes aren’t elongated or worn oval-shaped (a sign of a loose fit that’s been ridden with play in it for a while), and that any inserts are still solidly bonded rather than spinning freely. Aluminum masts are more forgiving here and generally cheaper to inspect for damage — dents and bends are usually visible to the eye — but they flex more under load and are heavier, which matters if you’re comparing a carbon and aluminum mast at a similar price.
When to walk away
Any confirmed delamination, a mast that’s been broken and repaired, or visible cracking around a fitting are reasons to pass, no matter how good the price looks — a mast failure while riding is a genuine safety issue, not just an inconvenience. When in doubt, ask the seller for a video of the tap test, or for the mast’s approximate hours/sessions of use.
